What are small storage containers used for?
Do you also have a drawer or cupboard where the last few handfuls of almonds, an open bag of yeast, or the remnants of rice are kept in half-rolled-up bags? You're not the only one. This is exactly where small storage containers make a difference. They are designed for small items: dry goods you don't use a whole large container for, a portion of nuts, leftover pasta, bouillon cubes, baking powder, or those spice mixes that otherwise clutter up your space.
In this collection, you'll find two types of small containers, each solving a different problem. Gastromax containers are lightweight plastic containers for dry goods in cupboards and drawers, while the glass food storage boxes with bamboo lids are intended for food you want to see and store neatly. What they have in common is that they are small enough to stand several next to each other on a shelf without everything toppling over when you pull one out.
What sizes are they available in?
The size determines whether a small container genuinely helps you or just becomes another half-full container. Therefore, it's worth considering what you actually intend to put in it before choosing.
Gastromax containers for dry goods are available in four sizes: 0.35 liters, 0.8 liters, 1.6 liters, and 1.65 liters. The smallest one, 0.35 liters, is good for things you use in small amounts: baking powder, dried yeast, chia seeds, or a small portion of nuts. The larger ones, around 1.5 liters, are better suited for rice, pasta, oatmeal, and flour.
The glass boxes with bamboo lids come in 320 ml, 520 ml, and 800 ml. Here, 320 ml is the small one you reach for a single leftover portion or a snack. There's also a single container with a wooden lid of 0.84 liters if you want the warm look of wood on your shelf.
A little tip: measure the drawer or cupboard where the containers will go before ordering. This way, you'll get the size that optimizes space, instead of guessing.
Plastic or glass: what should you choose?
The choice between plastic and glass is less about what's best, and more about where the container will be placed and what you're putting in it.
Gastromax plastic containers are lightweight. This matters when they need to be taken down from a high shelf or stand together in a drawer you open daily. They are also easy to handle, and because they weigh little, you won't notice there are seven of them in the cupboard. Plastic is ideal for dry goods that don't need to be seen through to make sense.
Glass food storage boxes have the advantage that you can see the contents immediately. This is nice for leftovers and food in the refrigerator, where you quickly forget what's hiding at the back. Glass also doesn't absorb odors or colors from food in the same way. On the other hand, they weigh more. The bamboo lid gives a calm, natural look that works well if the containers are on display on the kitchen counter rather than tucked away.
Why small containers create more overview than large ones
It sounds counterintuitive, but smaller containers often provide a better overview than a few large ones. When each item has its own small container, you can see at a glance what you have and when something is running out. You no longer stand in the supermarket wondering if there's more oatmeal at home.
An organized kitchen is not just for appearances. Of course, it looks neat and tidy when dry goods are uniformly stored rather than in a mix of bags and half-open packages, but it's the overview that simplifies everyday life. Fixed places for everything mean you spend less time searching, and clutter has a harder time spreading.
You don't have to overhaul your entire kitchen at once. Start with one drawer or one cupboard: take everything out, wipe it down with a damp cloth, and give the dry goods you actually use their own small container. If you want even more clarity, you can put labels on them so everyone in the home knows what's what.
Can the containers be stacked and fit in cupboards and drawers?
This is often where a small container either saves or wastes space. A shallow, square shape utilizes a shelf better than a round one because there are no empty corners between containers. The square glass boxes with bamboo lids stand closely together, and the rectangular dry goods containers from Gastromax are designed to stand in a row in cupboards and drawers without wasted space in between.
If you have deep cupboards where the back containers disappear, a turntable can help: you simply spin it around and grab the container you need without moving the others. And if the small containers are to stand with the rest of your kitchen's dry goods storage, it might be worth looking at storage jars for larger quantities, so you get a cohesive, calm look on the shelves.
Small containers outside the kitchen
Although these containers are made for dry goods and food, a small lidded container is useful not only in the kitchen. In the bathroom, a small container can gather cotton pads, hair ties, or those small items that otherwise clutter the sink. At the desk, it keeps clips, chargers, and the loose items that accumulate in a drawer organized.
If you want to organize more small items throughout your home, boxes or drawer organizers might be a better match for that specific task, while these small containers maintain their strength where they need to seal tightly around something: food, dry goods, and items that need to be kept together and fresh.
