What do you use dry food storage containers for?
Do you also have flour in one bag, grains in a half-open package, and pasta in another that tumbles out every time you open the cupboard? You're not the only one. Dry goods typically reside in their original packaging, and that original packaging is rarely built to last: bags that don't seal properly, bulging boxes, and a cupboard where you can never quite see how much you have left.
Dry food storage containers solve this by giving each item a designated container with a tight lid. Flour, sugar, oats, rice, pasta, coffee, nuts, dried fruit, and breakfast cereals move from flimsy bags into containers that you can close, organize systematically, and see through. The result is a kitchen cupboard where you can see at a glance what you have and how much is left. This peace of mind and overview makes shopping and cooking a little easier every single day.
Which size container should you choose for flour, sugar, and pasta?
The short answer: match the size to how much of the item you actually have, not to what looks best on the shelf. A kilo bag of wheat flour takes up more space than you might think, while dried yeast or specialty grains only need a small container.
The containers in this collection come in a wide range, so you can choose the size according to the content. For large quantities of flour, sugar, rice, and pasta, the 3.5-liter container is a good fit. For oats, muesli, and a standard bag of sugar, 2.25 liters and 1.65 liters are just right. For coffee, nuts, seeds, and baking accessories, the 0.8-liter and the small 0.35-liter are more practical, so you don't end up with a half-empty giant container for a small portion.
A good tip is to fill the containers with what you already have the first time you set up the system. That way, you'll quickly figure out which sizes you need more of and which you rarely use. If you want to start comprehensively, there's a package solution with storage containers and a large package solution that gives you several sizes at once.
How to keep dry goods fresh and free from moisture
Dry goods last longest when stored dry, dark, and tightly sealed. Moisture is the big culprit: if moisture gets to the flour, it clumps, and grains and seeds lose their crispness. A tightly fitting lid keeps humidity out and prevents an opened bag from absorbing moisture from the cupboard.
The same lid also keeps out pantry moths and other insects. Flour moths are a classic kitchen pest that easily find their way into an open flour bag, and a tight container effectively keeps them out. If you've had moths before, it's a good idea to thoroughly wipe down the cupboard and pour all dry goods into containers so there are no open bags left for them to spread in.
One last piece of advice: don't pour new product on top of old remnants. Empty the container, clean it, and refill from scratch. That way, you always know that the bottom layer hasn't been sitting for too long. If you want to read more about the system surrounding this, we have a guide to dry food storage.
Stackable containers that provide an overview in the cupboard
One of the biggest advantages of uniform containers is that they can stand side by side and on top of each other without creating gaps or crooked stacks. Bags and boxes of all possible shapes steal space because nothing fits together. Containers in the same series, however, utilize the shelf because they have flat sides and flat lids for stacking.
It also creates a calm, uniform look when you open the cupboard: the same shape, the same line, and contents you can see. It's not just pretty; it makes everyday life easier because you don't have to dig to find the pasta. Place what you use often at the front and at eye level, and store what you rarely use further back or higher up.
Add labels and complete the system
When flour, sugar, and various grains are in identical containers, they suddenly look alike. A label solves this and ensures that both you and the rest of the household can find the right item immediately, without having to open three lids first.
A set of labels provides a uniform and aesthetic expression and is the small detail that ties the system together. If you want to read more about how to label dry goods so it lasts, we have compiled advice in the guide to labels for dry goods.
Plastic or glass containers with wooden lids?
This collection offers two aesthetics that solve the same task slightly differently. The lightweight containers are practical, robust, and easy to move around, and they are difficult to break if dropped. They are an obvious choice for large daily consumption and for shelves where they need to be handled frequently.
If you want a softer, more natural look on the shelf, there are containers with wooden lids in two sizes, 0.84 liters and 4.4 liters. Wood is a calming material that suits a kitchen where the containers are also displayed on the table or on open shelves. If you prefer glass all the way, you'll find a wider selection in our storage jars. Regardless of what you choose, the point is the same: a fixed place and a tight lid for each dry good.
Start with one cupboard at a time
You don't have to clear out the entire kitchen at once. Often, the easiest way is to start with the cupboard where the dry goods are already stored and go from there. Pull everything out, throw away old and expired items, wipe down the shelf, and transfer the rest into containers, filling as needed.
Many are surprised by how many half-empty bags and duplicates were actually hidden away. Once you're done, you'll not only have a neater cupboard but a system that continues to provide an overview because everything has its place. If you have questions about which sizes are right for your kitchen, we are here to help.
