Why a matching set provides more peace of mind than loose containers
Do you also have a kitchen drawer full of containers that don't really fit together? A lid from one, a base from another, and none of them stack neatly. You are not alone. When containers are bought bit by bit, they rarely end up matching, and then the cupboard becomes cluttered, even if it is filled with good intentions.
A matching set of storage containers solves this all at once. You get several sizes that are intended to stand next to each other, often with the same modular dimensions or uniform lids, so they stack instead of taking up space horizontally. The result is both practical and aesthetic: you utilize shelf space better, quickly get an overview of what you have, and the cupboard gets a calm, uniform look instead of a collection of random shapes.
That is the feeling a set gives compared to individual containers. You don't have to think about whether the parts fit together. They already do, from the moment you open the package.
How airtight lids keep food fresh longer
The most important reason to collect dry goods and leftovers in containers is freshness. A tight-fitting lid keeps air and moisture out, and it is precisely air and moisture that cause flour to clump, biscuits to go soft, and grains to lose their crispness. The less air that gets in, the longer the food stays as it should.
The same lid also keeps pests and moths out. Pantry moths and other kitchen visitors typically enter through open bags and poorly closed packages, and a closed container removes that way in. If you have ever had moths in a flour bag, you know what a big difference a sealed container makes.
A practical piece of advice: transfer dry goods to the container as soon as the package is opened, instead of rolling up the bag and hoping for the best. It is in the first few days after opening that the freshness begins to disappear, and a container from day one makes the biggest difference.
Choose sizes based on what you actually have in the cupboard
What makes a set good is that the sizes match your food items. A container that is too big for what you pour into it stands half-empty and wastes space. One that is too small cannot hold the entire bag, and then the rest stays in the package anyway.
Think in three groups when choosing. Large containers fit what you have a lot of and use regularly: flour, sugar, rice, and pasta. Medium ones hold grains, oatmeal, lentils, and beans. Small ones are for what you use a little of at a time, or for leftovers you are saving for the next day. A set with multiple sizes covers the whole spectrum, so you don't have to juggle containers that don't fit the contents.
If you need containers for the whole kitchen, you can advantageously browse the full selection of storage containers for dry goods and storage containers for food, so you get exactly the sizes that match what you have the most of.
Storage containers in glass or plastic
The material determines both the look and how you use the containers. Glass is heavy, scratch-resistant, and completely neutral to taste and smell. It can go from the fridge to the table and looks calm and aesthetic on the shelf, which fits well with the feng shui philosophy of natural, harmonious materials. For storing leftovers or serving directly, glass is often the nicest choice.
Plastic, on the other hand, is light and robust, and it is hard to break if the container is dropped. This makes plastic practical for large amounts of dry goods in high cupboards and for everyday meal prep, where containers are moved around a lot. If you want to dive into the differences, we have compiled a guide on Plastic storage containers – Create order in the kitchen and fridge.
Many end up using both: glass for things that should be seen or served, and plastic for things that need to be moved and stacked. There is no one right answer, only what fits your everyday life.
Are the containers dishwasher and freezer safe?
That depends on the individual container, and it is worth checking the product before you start the system. As a rule of thumb, the container itself can withstand more than the lid, because lids often have a sealing ring or are made of a different material that should not be exposed to high heat.
Our Glass food storage boxes with bamboo lids – 3-pack (320/520/800 ml) are a good example: the glass base is robust, but the bamboo lid is a natural material that should not go in the dishwasher. Bamboo lasts longest if you wipe it with a damp cloth and let it air dry, instead of soaking it. If something is going in the freezer, remember that liquid expands when it freezes, so leave a little air between the food and the lid.
How to get started with the entire kitchen at once
If you don't want to buy the containers individually, they are also available as ready-made sets. Our Storage container package solution and Large storage container package solution combine several sizes in one purchase, so you can go straight to organizing an entire cupboard without having to put the containers together yourself.
Start with one cupboard at a time. You don't have to turn the whole kitchen upside down in one day. Pull everything out of the dry goods cupboard, look through the packages for old items, wipe the shelves down, and then fill up the containers. Put what you use most often at the front and the large containers at the bottom, where they are easiest to lift. Once the system is in place, it almost maintains itself.
If you want to finish it off immediately, you can add labels, so everyone in the household can see what is what, and the containers get put back in their place after use. That is the little final touch that makes the difference between a nice cupboard and a cupboard that stays nice.
From dry goods to meal prep in the same system
A set of containers is not just for flour and rice in the cupboard. The same containers are just as useful in the fridge and freezer, where they keep leftovers fresh and make it easy to see what should be eaten first. If you prepare food in advance for the week, fixed containers in fixed sizes are the whole basis for calm meal prep, where portions are stacked neatly and don't disappear into the back of the fridge.
If you want to use the containers that way, you can get specific advice in our guide to meal prep containers - how to easily create peace in the fridge and freezer. The point is the same all the way through: when things have fixed places and fit together, everyday life becomes easier, and clutter has a harder time surviving. If you have questions along the way, we are always ready to help.
