Why square containers take up less space than round ones
Have you ever tried stacking round containers in the cupboard, only to find space being wasted in all the corners between them? You're not the only one. That is exactly what the square shape solves. When containers have straight sides, they stand edge-to-edge with no air between them, allowing you to utilize the full depth of your cupboard, fridge, and freezer instead of just the middle.
Square storage containers are the most obvious solution if you want to make the most of your space. They sit tightly together on the shelf, can be stacked on top of one another, and provide a calm, uniform look because they align rather than curve. For a small kitchen or limited cupboard depth, that difference alone can be reason enough to choose square over round.
Dry goods in plastic or leftovers in glass
The collection covers two different needs, and it's worth knowing this before you choose. If you want to organize flour, sugar, grains, pasta, and other storage containers for dry goods, the square plastic containers from Gastromax are an obvious place to start. They are lightweight, keep dry goods moisture-free and airtight, and don't take up unnecessary space in the cupboard.
If, however, the container is heading for the fridge with leftovers, packed lunches, or meal prep, the square glass food storage boxes with bamboo lids are the natural choice. Glass does not absorb odors or colors from food, is more durable, and you can see the contents clearly. In short: plastic for dry goods in the cupboard, glass for moist items in the fridge.
How to choose the size
The containers come in several sizes, and the point is to match the size to what you are filling them with. The smallest plastic containers at 0.35 L and 0.8 L are suitable for things you use a little of at a time: baking powder, seeds, nuts, or a single type of grain. If you are looking for very small ones for spices and snacks, you will find them gathered under small storage containers.
The medium ones at 1.6 L and 2.25 L hit the mark for what most people use the most: oatmeal, rice, pasta, and muesli. If you need room for a whole bag of flour or sugar, the large 3.5 L container is what you are looking for. For leftovers, the glass boxes are available in 320 ml, 520 ml, and 800 ml, allowing you to choose the one that fits a portion rather than using an oversized box that is only half full.
A good piece of advice: it is better to buy a few different sizes and see what you actually use, rather than filling the cupboard with the same size. That way, you will quickly find your own rhythm.
Do the lids keep dry goods and leftovers fresh?
Yes, and that is the whole idea. The containers have airtight lids that keep moisture and air out, so flour doesn't clump, grains don't go stale, and leftovers last longer in the fridge. An airtight lid is also your best protection against flour mites and other pests that easily find their way into an open bag.
The glass boxes close with bamboo lids, which provide a tight seal and an added soft, natural look. Natural materials like wood, bamboo, and glass create tranquility in the kitchen and fit the vision of a home where everything has its designated place.
Organize your containers with labels
One container does one thing well. Several containers in the same series do more: they create an overview. When flour, sugar, and grains are stored in matching square containers side by side, you can see at a glance what you have and what is running low, so you won't be standing in the supermarket wondering if you have more at home.
Put the finishing touch on it with a set of labels for storage containers. Labels make the system easy for the whole household to read and also provide the uniform, aesthetic look that makes the cupboard look tidy even when it is full. How to get started
You don't need to turn the entire kitchen upside down at once. Start with one cupboard, preferably the one where the dry goods live. Take everything out, throw away the old stuff, wipe the shelf, and then transfer things into the containers you actually need. Many are surprised at how little it takes before the cupboard feels calm.
If you need inspiration for the rest of the kitchen, we have gathered our best advice in our guide on kitchen storage containers. And if you have any questions along the way, we are ready to help. We promise it is all worth it once the system is in place.
